PART 14
Who to believe?

Sunmi dropped the key to the room’s lodge and reluctantly followed Papa T and his wife.  “Papa T,  I will sue Daniel.  He doesn’t know anything. I will sue him. He won’t go scout free. I. Will press charges against him. ” Sunmi kept saying in the car.  Papa T drove the car silently thinking of what to do. His wife sat beside Sunmi.
They got to Chief Olawuyi’s residence. Sunmi signaled  Danlandi to open the gate.
“Welcome, Aunty.” Danlandi greeted. Sunmi’s mother sighted the car from her window upstairs.
“Daddy Iririola,  which guest are you expecting this morning.” She asked with her gaze fixed outside, when she heard the sound of a car.
“Nobody, why did you ask?”  Her husband, who was shaving in the bathroom shook his head.
“There’s a car in the compound… Ah!  It’s Taiwo ooo.” She said immediately when she saw him alight from the car.
“Which Taiwo?” Chief Olawuyi asked from the bathroom.
“Oko aburo yin, your cousin’s husband” She said. Mama T was Chief Olawuyi’s cousin from his maternal grand father’s lineage.
“He didn’t say he’s co…”
“Ah!  Kilode? What happened.? They are here with Sunmi.” His wife said, alarmed and hurried downstairs.
“Here with Sunmi ke?” He dropped his shaving stick, went to the window, and stretched his neck. He caught a glimpse of his daughter with Papa T and his wife. His Daughter’s hair and clothes were disheveled, like a woman, thrown out of her husband’s house. He went back to the bathroom and quickly washed his face and ran downstairs in his robe.
“kilo de  Taiwo?  Kilosele? Tunrayo,  kilode Kilosele. What happened?” he turned to the couple, agitated.
“It’s a long story. Please Aunty, can you please help us prepare  hot tea for her?” Papa T asked Sunmi’s mother, calmly.
“Boda mi,  e kaaro” Mama T greeted.
“Tunrayo, what happened? Where did you see Sunmi? She is supposed to be at the summit now.”
“Hmmmmmmm. It’s a long story.” Mama T said.
Sunmi’s mother brought in the tea in a dash. They all watched as Sunmi gulp down the content.
“Omo mi,  kilode?” Her mother asked,  sitting beside her.
Sunmisola started weeping. She buried her head in hands. She couldn’t tell her parents her ordeal. Papa T narrated what happened, and how they had come from Osun that morning when Sunmi told them.
Her father was enraged.  He loved Daniel and had taken him as a son. “I will deal with him.  I will ensure he is castrated.” He said with visible anger.
Her mother helped her take her bag upstairs and quickly Prepared breakfast for her.
She was pained. Sunmi had told them that she was calling off the wedding.  Her sisters and friends had promised to start tripping to her place from Sunday, the following day, to help her with things to get at the market. She had looked forward to receiving members of her extended family for a week or two.  She had sold out hundreds of ‘Aso ebi’ How would she face the shame of a canceled wedding. How would she face the Glorious women group in the church, she sighed.
Sunmi’s father decided to call Daniel after they forced Sunmi to her breakfast.
At Daniel’s end,  he was still feeling bad and had several nightmare the previous night. Immediately it was dawn,  he drove down to pastor Hyke’s place. He was lying lifeless on the chair in the expensively furnished family lounge when Chief Olawuyi’s call came in.  He checked the caller turned away from it. The phone rang the second time.  Pastor Hyke walked into the room and asked him to pick his ringing phone.  Daniel shook his head.
“Who’s calling? He asked
Sunmi’s father.”  Daniel replied.
The phone rang for the third time.
“Hello,” Pastor Hyke picked the call and spoke in his British accent. The type he used when preaching but don’t use it when with his family.
“Hello Daniel.”
“This is not Daniel Sir. This is Pastor Hyke,  Daniel’s senior Pastor,” Pastor Hyke said.
“I want to speak to Daniel.” Sunmi’s father said irritated.
“Sir,  he’s not in the best frame of mind to speak with you sir.”
“How will he be in the best frame of mind. How will he be in the best frame of mind ehh?”  He was enraged. “After he molested my daughter Ehn? So,  you are shielding him. I am coming for him.  I will deal with him. He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with in this state… I will castr…”
“…Daddy. please sir can you calm down?” Pastor Hyke said.
Chief Olawuyi was silent.
“Sir, this is not a matter of threat.  I don’t know what Sunmi has told you sir.  Daniel came here crying and told me he fell into sin with his fiancée. I have chastised him here. We should understand that it  was a moment of weakness for both of them and she did not deny him.” Pastor Hyke explained.
Daniel was awed at the way pastor Hyke was speaking controllably on the phone.
“So,  my daughter is lying?”  Sunmi’s father asked, eyeing his daughter. The whole family listened to pastor Hyke because The phone was on speaker.
“Sir,  tell your daughter to tell you the truth. She can’t let the devil use her to destroy someone’s life and ministry. She went about saying Daniel raped her. Why would he?  This is illogical sir.  Now,  come to think of it sir, in a week’s time,  they would be married. Why would he rape his wife to be? Why would he rape someone he loved so much and they were to attend a seminar in your church… He told me she was the one who even initiated the move. Sir, ask your daughter well. Rape is a very serious allegation o. It was consensual sex…”
Sunmi’s father sighed and kept mute. Pastor Hyke rant on.
“Can I speak to Daniel?” He said finally. He wanted to hear from Daniel.
Pastor Hyke handed the phone to Daniel.
“Daniel.  What did you do to my daughter? You molested the lady you are going to be getting married to Ehn Daniel…”
“Daddy,  I did not molest her.” Daniel was surprised at his own audacity. He looked at pastor Hyke who gave him a thumb up.
“It was a moment of weakness. I told her to wait inside the car for me, in the garage but she refused.  She said she wanted to see the house.  She came in and started removing her dress. I couldn’t control myself and we both fell into sin.  I have come to my pastor to confess…”
“Daniel, you are a big fool and a Lier,” Sunmi said over the phone.
Chief  Olawuyi dropped the line. Sunmi’s rant did not let him talk further with Daniel, to hear from him. His intention was to hear from Daniel. He began to doubt his daughter’s’ narrative.
He suddenly became angry at her. He began to reason with Daniel and Pastor Hyke. Who would in his right sense,  rape a supposed wife to b, in a week to their wedding. He turned to his daughter, who was still ranting.
“Shut up there and let me hear word. Just keep your mouth shut. Look at you,  you seduced him.  Instead of you to own up,  you are here telling us cock and bull story and ranting. With all your advocacy on “say no to sex before marriage.  With all of your ‘don’t fornicate, marriage is honorable and the bed undefined blah blah blah…’ Look at where you have landed yourself. You went to his place,  to do what in the first place? Pretender, hypocrite… You now came here to tell us that you are calling off the wedding because of guilt. Which wedding are you calling off in the first place?  The one I have invited all my friends for or which one? You want to put me to shame.  You want to shame me in the presence of my friends. You will marry him o and nothing will stop the wedding… See, if you like, file for divorce one week after the wedding, I don’t care, but,  you are marrying him… ”
“Dad,  that’s not possible.  I will not…”
Gboahhh,”  he landed a slap on his daughter’s face. Papa T restrained him from a further slap. Sunmi held her cheek with her palm, too stunned to cry. Her father had never raised his hands on her before.
“ Spoilt brat. I’m talking you are replying. Stupid child. It’s not your fault. You have been over-pampered.  it’s not me you will disgrace. It’s not me at all.  It’s your mother’s family that you will disgrace. Harlot. Devil”
Sunmi couldn’t control the tears Now,  flowing freely.
“Boda mi,  let’s not take matters into our hands.” Mama T said.
“Sebi she’s your mentee. Sebi that’s what you people are teaching her…” He ranted.
Her mother calmed him.
“Leave me alone. You trained her and spoilt her. Sunmi will never mingle with people. She will not mingle with sharp people. At Sunmi’s age,  she will be going about shouting that she’s still a virgin and she will be proud of saying it. Opening her mouth to say that. Posting on social media that people should wait until marriage before having sex. Imagine! She went to university and kukuma has two suegbe people as her mentors. If she had had sex before,  she wouldn’t have come with this stupid allegation. Who knows maybe it’s just the pain she’s experiencing because she’s a first-timer that’s making her behave like this, saying its rape. ”
He turned to Papa T and his wife. “ My daughter does not look like me. When we were younger, we had sex with our girlfriends and it was nothing. Did it change the fact that we are Christians? No. Nobody made mountains out of it.” He turned to Sunmi, “you now came here, telling us that your fiancé raped you. Meanwhile,  you carried your legs to his place o. You are now feeling guilty that you did not live up to the “Stupid no sex until marriage” that you are preaching. Do you think it’s easy to stay without sex until marriage? How many people have you seen go about with pride that they are virgins?  Do you think it’s easy? If it’s easy, why did you go to Daniel’s place to make him have his way with you? You are now feeling guilty and you came here to tell us that you want to call off the wedding. Wo, See,  look here,  if I curse you eeehhhn Sunmi, if I curse you, with all the money I have spent on the forthcoming wedding,  see,  if I curse you Sunmi, it will follow you and your generation forever …”
“Daddy  Irirola,  don’t say that please.” Papa T and Sunmi’s mother calmed him.
“Omo oshi. Omo Iranu” Sunmi’s father said and stormed out of the living room.
Sunmi sat on the sofa stunned at her father’s outburst. She was lost in words and thoughts.

PART 15
CLASSROOM JOB (Four years before)
It was a bright morning when Sunmi walked into Royalty High College. She had called the proprietress that she would be resuming back to the school that morning. She felt nostalgic about her days there. She had taught there during a long university strike. Then, she was in her final year and final semester when schools went on strike. The strike which was meant to be for a month lasted eight months. During the period, she had decided to teach, to keep herself busy. The proprietress of Royalty High College was her sister-in-law’s Aunt. It was easy for her to get a placement in the school through her sister-in-law.
Sunmi enjoyed every bit of her stay in the school. The students loved her. She taught the junior students mathematics and the senior class, accounting. She was the youngest teacher and the students related to her well. She told them stories of campus, challenges and also preached Christ to them. She was assigned a JSS 3 class, as a class teacher, in place of Mrs. Ben, who was on maternity leave.
Months after her NYSC, when it was difficult for her to secure a job, she decided to teach, till she got her dream job.
“Auntie Sunmi is back. Miss Olawuyi is back.” Emmanuel ran into his classroom panting. They had just finished English Language and he had taken the class exercise notes to the staff room and was going back to the class when he sighted Sunmi, coming out of the admin’s block.
“Backbencher, Please, don’t disturb us. If you don’t want to read for the physics test, please keep quiet and let others who are interested in succeeding in life read.” Anita, the head girl, and neatest student, attacked him. Emmanuel was remorseful. He had been nicknamed ‘backbencher’ by Anita because of his poor academic performance. He hated the name. He looked at her and hissed, “Don’t worry, let’s see who will be the backbencher in life. Because all the teachers are praising you, you let it get into your head.” He hissed again and turned to his seat, dejected.
Minutes later, Sunmi walked into the class. The class she was assigned to as a class teacher. The kids are now in SS 2. They were in JSS 3 when she left two years back.
The class went wild with noise and jubilation on sighting her. Some of the girls jumped on her. She tried to hush them. She kept beaming with a smile. It took her some time to restore order in the classroom. She recalled some of their names and asked after those whose name she remembered, but didn’t see. She asked after Peter.
“Pero… Pero… peroo…” The class echoed and laughed.
“What… What is Pero?”
“That’s his nickname,” Emmanuel explained to her.
“Really? So you now call yourselves by nicknames…” The class laughed.
“What’s your own Nick name,” she asked laughing, looking at Emmanuel.
“BB” Anita said. The class laughed again.
“Blackberry?” Sunmi joined in the laughter. “Yes Yes, blackberry…” Anita quickly said. She knew Sunmi will not approve of the name, ‘backbencher.’
“Where is Peter?” She asked again.
“He’s a part-time student ma’am. He comes to school when he likes.” Blessing, the assistant head boy said. The class roared in laughter.
Sunmi felt bad. She hoped the boy had not stopped schooling.
She remembered when she was assigned to their class when the kids were in JSS 3, She noticed he lacked parental care and guidance. He was insolent, dirty, and truant. She delved into his private life and learned that his father had sent his mother out of the home when she was unable to give him more children. The father, according to peter is wealthy and had gone to marry another wife. He never cared about him.
Peter’s poor mother had been surviving on selling second-hand clothes, using the proceeds to send her only child to Royal High College. Peter lacked parental care and guidance and he was left on his own, while his mother toiled and toiled to make ends meet.
He became a bully and pick up unnecessary fights with his classmates. The junior students ran away from him. Some senior students avoided his path. He was suspended on several occasions and his mother would come weeping and begging the school management. The only reason the school left him was because of his athletic skills. He had won many trophies for his school but, his unruly behavior made teachers dislike and avoid him.
Sunmi was asked to take the senior commercial students, Accounting and also teach an arm of SS 2, Mathematics.
Her students loved her methods of teaching. It was her third week in school. She was solving some equations on the board when she noticed a student walk into the classroom. She stopped, folded her arms, and watched the student walk to his seat, with a gloomy face; It was Peter.
“Welcome Peter.” She said, after he was seated.
“Ah! Aunty Sunmi.” He cheered up. “I didn’t know you are the one. I’m sorry ma. Good morning Ma’am.” Peter said standing.
“So, if it had not been me, you wouldn’t have greeted before coming to the class.”
“I’m sorry ma’am. All the teachers here don’t like me and, I avoid their trouble,” he said.
“The second period is almost over and you are just strolling in like you own the school,” she blinked. Peter was silent.
She waved him to sit down. “See me today when you are free.”
“Yes ma’am” Peter replied and sat quietly. He was happy to see Sunmi. She was the only teacher whom he respected, the only teacher who does not call him names.
Sunmi rounded off her teaching and reminded Peter to see her…
