PART 20
The Evidence

The Olawuyis were seated in their living room downstairs, watching the news.  It was all over social media about a bride who called off her wedding.
Sunmi was in her room. Her phone was off. She was sick of all the stories on Sarah SLim’s blog. Sarah had used the period to display her hatred for Sunmi.
Sunmi had contacted one of her friends, who’s a lawyer, to help her with the case.
It was around 5:00 PM,  on the evening of her supposed wedding, Sunmi told her parents earlier, that she wanted to be alone, and her father had instructed the gateman not to let in anyone.
She layed on her bed, all through, her face free of tears. Papa T,  and his wife had called her every day,  of that week to pray with her. Segun too, called, to pray with her.
“Lord Jesus, Thank you. Thank you for helping me out of his mess. I Would have been married to a demon called in place of a husband. Lord, I thank you.  I know there’s a message from this mess.  I won’t give up Lord.  I will come out strong…”
She was still praying, on her bed,  when she heard faint noises coming from the living room, downstairs.
“Everybody, lie down flat.  If you raise your heard, I will not hesitate to blow off. Oya, lie flat see, Oga, I hear say you be Chief. If you don’t cooperate,  I will waste you and that will be all.
“We will cooperate, please,  anything you want,  we will give you. Anything,” Mrs. Olawuyi was saying with a shaky voice.

“Good. You will give me anything.” The boss laughed hysterically. “Where’s your daughter?”
“My my my daugh daugh daugh…my daughter?” Chief Olawuyi stuttered.
“If I repeat,  I will blast off your heard.”  He cocked his gun.
“She’s upstairs. She’s up….  Second room at your right-hand side. Please, don’t do anything to her. Please,  I beg of you, she has passed through a lot.  Today is supposed to be her wedding.  Please…” Mrs. Olawuyi pleaded.
“Will you keep quiet? Or I keep you silent.” The boss thundered. He turned to one of his gang members,
“Piro.”
“Yes, boss,”
“Go in search of the lady and collect the thing.”
Piro followed the description made by Chief Olawuyi, with a gun in his hand.
Sunmi was going to open the door on impulse, to see those who were talking downstairs. “I’ve told dad and Mum not to entertain any guest…” the door was pushed open.
“Peter!” She gasped.
“Ah! Aunt Sunmi.” He whispered, surprise written all over him.
“What are you doing here with a gun?” She asked, surprised.
“Shhhhh…  Aunty,  Shhhhh. Just obey.”
“What is it? what do you want Peter?
“Shhhhh” he placed a finger on his lips.   “You don’t know me.  I don’t know you.  Just obey.”
“What are you doing? Peter?”
“Where’s is the dress?”
“What dress?” Sunmi asked.
“A color purple dress with  stripes…lilac or onion….is what we were sent to bring.”
“Who sent you?”
Aunty, just obey please. Our boss is pointing a gun at two elderly people downstairs,  they may be your parents.  Just obey. Bring the dress and Let’s leave here. Please.”
Sunmi went to one of her boxes, opened it, and flung everything on the floor in anger and hatred towards Peter.  Beneath the box was the top she wore to Daniel’s house. She pulled it out. She flung the dress at him.
Peter was dumbfounded. The dress his mother gave her.  The dress she wore on his valedictory service, where he took many photographs with her. What has he gotten himself into? He staggered and held the frame of her bed.
“Get out of this room now” Sunmi commanded with hatred in her voice.
“Aunty,  I don’t know what this is all about,  but, I promise you, I will return this dress back to you.”
Sunmi looked at him with more hatred. He had the audacity to still talk, this boy, whom she loved so much. How easy for love to turn to hatred.
“Leave now,” she told him venom in her voice.
Peter went downstairs.
“Boss,  operation successful,” Peter said.
“If you stand up,” The boss threatened and walked out of the building,  with Peter.  They hurried to the gate where Tega, Peter’s friend, held the gateman hostage, with a gun.
Sunmi watches the trio leave the compound, from her bedroom upstairs. She stood there for some minutes. When she didn’t hear her parents’ voices, she ran downstairs. They were still lying flat on the group.
“Dad,  Mum,  it’s okay. They have gone.”
Her mother jumped up.
“Eeeh Sunmi. I hope they didn’t do you anything. I hope they didn’t shoot you. What do they want.” She said,  visibly shaken.
“I’m calling the police now.” Her father said.
“Dad,  this is not a police case,” Sunmi replied sitting on the sofa, suddenly tired.
“They came for my dress. The dress I wore to Daniels place.”
“Ah!” her father exclaimed.  “This is getting out of hands ooo.”
“So,  Daniel sent people to this house,  with guns, to steal a piece of evidence. Ah!” His mother kept exclaiming.
Sunmi wanted to tell them that the boy who came upstairs was Peter,  that, that was the Peter she told them about when she taught at Royal High College,  but,  she was too tired to talk.  She sat down there, on the sofa,  crying.
“Sunmi, it’s okay” Her father sat beside her and patted her shoulders. “it’s okay Sunmi. I doubted your story before,  but, I believe you now. What matters to me,  is your life.” He said.
“This Daniel is a devil. Ori mi Modupe oooo. My head I thank you ooo. Sunmi would have been married to him. Ah! My creator,  I thank you o,” her mother said.
Sunmi would later call Papa T to narrate what happened…

Who’s sent them to steal the dress?
Why?
Is Sunmi Safe?
How did Peter get himself entangled in the mess?

PART 21
The Evil That Men do

It was dusk when they got to Benin. The boss asked the boys to go with him to his apartment,  so that he would settle them. He decided to call Pastor Hyke, before dispersing the boys. “Chairman, mission accomplished.” The boss said over the phone. He was talking to Pastor Hyke.
“We don collect the cloth, send our balance now.”
“I’ll send your balance to you now.  Snap and send the picture of the cloth, let me confirm if it’d the dress.” Pastor Hyke said.
The boss asked  Tega to hold the dress, and he took a picture of the torn dress,  he then sends it on WhatsApp to Pastor Hyke.
Pastor Hyke sent it to Daniel who confirmed immediately that, that was the dress Sunmi wore to his house.
Pastor Hyke called The boss back.
“You did a good job friend.”
“Anything for Pastor Hyke of Light Bearers” The boss said in his husky voice.
“Did you see the lady?” Pastor Hyke asked.
“No ooo. We no wan waste time na….”
“I would have even asked you to help me beat the hell out of her,  to teach her a good lesson.” He said irritated. “Anyway,  I’m sending your balance now.”
Pastor Hyke dropped the call and sent the money.  He called back.
“I have sent the money. Please,  burn the dress.”
“No problem chairman. I don see the money. Tu’ale for our big Oga patapata …” The boss hailed excitedly.

The boss transferred fifty thousand naira each to the two boys. He gave them an extra five thousand naira for drinks.
“One of you will have to burn the dress now.” He instructed them as they planned to leave his place.
Peter volunteered to burn the dress. “Good riddance,”  Tega said when they left his place. “Who get time to dey burn clothes,” he hissed.
Peter shrugged. He had been quiet since they left Sunmi’s house, and all through their journey back to Benin.
Peter went to his hostel remorseful. If he had known that where they were going was his dearest teacher’s house,  he would have outrightly declined the offer. When Tega told him. The money offer was mouth-watering.  Fifty thousand for just a little operation. They were not going to kill anybody,  all they needed to do was for them to go and collect something from someone, for one big man in Lagos, Tega had explained.
He didn’t think twice,  the money was enticing. He needed to pay his tuition. His mother had been complaining of bad sales. He had lost Sunmi’s contact and there was no way he could reach her for help. Going for the operation in Lagos,  was the only way for him.
Little did they know that the boss was offered a million naira for the job. The boss had called Tega,  a  member of his gang, and told him to get one more person who’d be interested. The boss didn’t ’t want to involve the big guys in his gang. They were too rough and could make the operation go soar. Offering the two boys one hundred thousand naira wasn’t a bad idea. To them,  it was huge money.
What an irony, Peter sighed, and slumped on his bed. The dress his mother gave to his favorite teacher,  as a gift, the same dress he was sent to steal.  He promised to keep the dress and returned it back to her,  to redeem himself. Whoever had asked The boss to go and take that dress,  must have something up his sleeves.  The person had asked the boss to send the video of the dress, being burnt.
…………..
Pastor Hyke was in a high spirit after The boss called him.  “Good riddance to the lady called Sunmi.” He picked his phone and inserted a new and unregistered sim card He sent a message to her…
….Dear sister Sunmi,  I hope you’d win the case in court. Foolish lady… Now you can go on with the pressing charges and provide your evidence.  Stupid lady.  Let me sound this note of warning, If you try anything, your brother with his family in Ghana will pay for it first, we know his address in Kumasi. Then,  your parents will be got for it before we give you the last blow. Foolish lady….
He sent the message,  removed the sim card, and broke and flushed it in the toilet.
“Now to assignment two,” He said to himself. He picked his call to inform Daniel,  to see him.
He needed to get Christiana off his neck. The lady had been a parasite and she has proven to have a strong will over him. He had been married for seven years to Lola but lived in fear of Christiana’s blackmail.
He had dated Christiana and ended up marrying Lola. Christiana was devastated when she heard that Pastor Hyke was getting married to another lady. She had no idea that her Hyke was cheating on her until she saw his wedding invitation.
“ I have aborted many babies for him and no,  he wants to abandon me and marry someone else,” She wept bitterly.
She accosted pastor Hyke with caution, knowing fully well that he is a dangerous man. Christiana pleaded with him.  “Lola can be the legally married wife,  please let me be the side chic,”  she pleaded. “You cannot leave me like this.  I know it’s because you know that I can’t give birth, that made you want to marry Lola.  Please,  Hyke,  let me be your side chic. I won’t interfere in your marital affairs, I promise,” she pleaded desperately. Pastor Hyke was okay with the arrangement. As much as he wanted to get married,  he still did not want to let go of Christina.

Christiana decided to start attending pastor Hyke’s church. Later in the years, she was made the protocol unit leader. She became a pain on Pastor Hyke’s neck, with her incessant demands, and monitoring.  She had partially blocked ways for him to have access to the laps of other ladies in the church,  which did not go down well with Pastor Hyke. He was tired of her.
Pastor Hyke decided that he would make Daniel marry Christiana and then get her off his neck completely.  He had been toying with the idea before Sunmi came into the picture. Now, there’s a condition for helping Daniel out of the mess he found himself. The condition would be to marry Christiana. “Everything has fallen into place,” He smiled and stroke his beards.
