Sunmisola; Episodes 22&23

Hi guys!!! What’s up and how have you been?!
The support and comments I’ve been getting so far from the Sunmisola story have really been encouraging. This story is not to just entertain but to educate and seeks to correct some ills in our society. One way or the other, the story is relatable to the majority of us and I really do pray that the story continues to serve its purpose, which is to bless you.
For those who don’t know, the author of Sunmisola is someone very dear to me and of course, a part of me is in this story. What do I mean? While the author was creating the character, she had me in mind, heheheehe. And it’s the Kunumi character, so watch out for her!

PART 22
Fate
Sunmi’s nightmare started on the night the robbers came for her dress. She would dream of someone pursuing her, then, the person would turn to Peter, then, transform to Daniel, and eventually, the person would be Pastor Hyke. She would sometimes run to Papa T’s house, hiding there and her pursuer won’t see her. Sometimes, the pursuer would want to catch up with her, and she’d wake up, sweating. Other times she dreamt of wearing the stolen torn dress, with Pastor Hyke laughing hysterically at her. She started praying against forces attacking her. She called Papa T and told her what she’s been experiencing.
He instructed her to read and pray Isaiah 41:11-13 “…Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing, and they that strive with thee shall perish.
Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of naught…”
And also: Isaiah 49:24-26 “…Shall the prey be taken from the mighty or the lawful captive delivered?
But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob…”
For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee..”
She prayed the scriptures before going to bed every night, and she had peaceful nights of sleep afterward.
All through the period, she seldom picks calls. Chioma had told her to go to hell after the incidence and they stopped talking.
The only person who called her every day, visited her on some days, was Kunumi. Kunumi was a final year student and was home during the period; They were in the same choir.
Kunumi had angrily and bluntly told some of the church members who kept gossiping and badmouthing Sunmi, to mind their businesses. Sarah SLim, had gone as far as posting the incidence on her blog. She had termed it “The Church Pretender who called off her wedding after having sex with her fiancé… Some of them will come and be doing holy holy… Na dem worst pass.”
Sunmi had read all the comments on her blog. How do people feel jealous of you and then, you still show them, love? She felt sickened and betrayed, at comments and messages on her timeline and Inbox. Some insulted her, some encouraged her, some told her she was lying, that’s the reason she wasn’t speaking up. She deactivated all her social media accounts.
The three weeks official leave given to her, to prepare for her wedding and rest after the wedding, was over. She went to her office the Monday after the leave and dropped her resignation letter.
“Sunmi, you are one of the best we have here, you can’t just leave. If you want a transfer, we will work it out,” her boss pleaded. She had made up her mind. She shook her head, turned her back, and walked out of the office. She noticed that some of her co-workers were whispering to themselves. She paid no attention to them. Some returned her greetings with clenched teeth. “I owe nobody any explanation” she muttered, and went to her desk. Only her desk partner, Segun had called her and told her to be strong when he heard that, the wedding had been called off. He prayed that she found joy and peace in her decision. Sunmi cleared her desk. She packed her things in a carton box, and Segun offered to help her carry them to her car.
“Thanks Uncle Segun, I appreciate it.” Sunmi said when he dropped the things at the back seat. She opened the car and sat down, her hands on the steering, She sighed. She would miss Segun. They’ve been pretty close. Segun is married with kids. His wife runs a monthly teenage outreach. Sunmi had attended one of the outreaches and had spoken on sexual purity.
Segun opened the passenger’s seat and sat beside her.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He asked her. He had not asked her why she canceled her wedding.
Tears welled up in Sunmi’s eyes. She placed her head on the steering.
“It’s okay Sunmi if you don’t feel like talking.” Segun consoled. Sunmi raised up her head. Segun had called her by her name for the very first time in a long time. “I just want to let you know that whatever decision you took, was the best decision for your dearest colleague.”
Sunmi sniffed. “Segun, Daniel raped me.” She said suddenly.
“Whaaaa… Whaaaa whatttttttttt?” Segun stammered.
She narrated what happened. Segun covered his face with his palms. “Gosh!” he said. He has heard stories…Stories of abuse, from the many girls and boys his wife counseled. He has heard the most unimaginable things done to pretty little children. He has heard of fathers and mothers and uncles and aunts, and cousins, molest children, and teenagers. He cried on some of those nights when his wife told him of the many experiences of the teenagers she’s grooming. He felt for them, he carried their pains and encouraged his wife, Deborah to help the victims heal.
He housed some of the teenagers. Of all the things about molestation which he has heard, he has never been so close to someone who has been a victim. He has only heard…. And felt their pain.
His eyes were misty. It was easy to console a to be bride and tell her the decision she took, the decision to call off her wedding, was the best one. But, it’s never going to be easy to console a ‘Raped to be Bride’ by the man she was supposed to get married to. He let the tears dropped.
“Segun, it’s okay. I’m living past it.”
Segun nodded his head. He touched her shoulder. “Sunmi, the book of Isaiah 28:5 says In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people…. See, you are a strong lady. this will pass.”
Sunmi nodded her head. He patted her shoulder and bade her goodbye. His heart was heavy, his eyes were still misty. He noticed all eyes turned to him when he entered the office. He went straight to the restroom and gave a silent cry, “God, why Sunmi? Why? She is devoted to you. She loved you. She’s passionate about you. Lord, why would you allow such a thing to happen to her. Lord why? Why Sunmi…”
There was a knock on the door. He washed his face and cleaned it with a handkerchief. There was a vacuum inside him. A vacuum, created by Sunmi’s story. A vacuum he wanted to fill and refill. He couldn’t concentrate on his work. He packed his things, and went home.

PART 23
God’s Ways

…Sunmi drove home and went straight to bed, after resigning from her job. She decided to stop dwelling on what would have been. She was determined to get over her predicament. She had new plans. The first was to leave for Ghana, to stay with her brother. But,  she let the idea for.  She thought of going to Osun,  to stay with Papa T for some time,  until she’s completely healed. She let the idea die again. She wouldn’t want to be a burden to her mentor. Another idea crossed her mind,  to leave the country. She decided to let her thoughts wandered on leaving Nigeria. She would go to Canada,  America…anywhere… and seek refuge there and start a new life.  Build a career,  and become successful. The idea looked perfect.
She had decided not to press charges. She was scared for her family. She doesn’t want to put the innocent lives in danger. She decided not to have anything to do with Daniel again… but….
She noticed she suddenly started feeling tired and dizzy. Good thing, she sleeps all through the day, drowning herself into sleep. She wakes up tired every day. Her body ached from sleeping.

Her mother was the first to notice the changes in her physique. She told her husband but he was skeptical.  “I don’t believe it.” He told her and warned her not to add pepper to their daughter’s injury.
Days later,  Sunmi was confused at the rate at which she sleeps, wakes up when everyone was out of the house,  eat and fall back to sleep again. When she noticed the changes in her body, she thought she was adding fats from not working, from just sleeping,  eating, and sleeping again. She started feeling some tightness in her stomach. She knew it, she had dreaded it, she was pregnant.
She had caught her father looking at her stomach on different occasions but, it never made sense to her.
The Pregnancy would have been stopped, she reasoned. If she had not been too naïve,  if she had gone to the hospital immediately after the incidence,  if she had not gone to the campground and wallowed in self-pity,  if only she had gone first to the hospital,  the fetus would have been stopped. If only… she was distraught.
She decided she was not going to cry over the spilled milk. She was not going to cry over the pregnancy. She had cried in the past weeks, that tears stopped coming from her eyes. Every attempt to cry gave her a headache,  and she stopped crying.
Segun’s word came back to her. “This will pass…” She had quoted and memorized the scripture’s verse he told her, Isaiah 28:5in  that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people …”
She called Papa T and told him she was pregnant.
“I know.”  He said calmly and sighed.
She was surprised that he knew. That he knew things that happened to people when no one has told him.
“Are your parents aware?” He asked.
“I can’t say.  I haven’t told them but I think they know.”
Papa T sighed again “What’s your intention…what do…”
“I’m keeping the baby” Sunmi cut in.
“I know you are keeping the baby. You know I won’t advise you to go for an abortion. What is your next move? What do you want to do?  You can’t just sit at home all day…”

“I don’t know. There are many options placed before me,  and now this pregnancy. I don’t know what to do  now.”
“Would you like to come and stay with us, till you put to bed?”
“Oh, papa T” Sunmi cried.  “I have thought about it before. Oh! You are God sent. I was going to ask,  but on second thought,  I decided against it.  I would not want to be a burden to you and Mama T…”
Papa T laughed. “Sunmi,  you should know that I and my wife are One. Whatever decision she makes binds on me and whatever decision I make binds on her too. Well,  it was her decision anyway and we’ve prayed about it. we just wanted God to confirm it, by placing it in your heart. We were praying for strength, for you, when God told us that a seed has already been planted, and he wants you to stay with us.”
Sunmi sat relaxed, listening to Papa T in amazement.
“…initially,  I felt bad. I  felt very bad about your situation. Why would God allow such a thing to happen to you, I questioned.  Was the rape incidence not enough?  Now pregnancy? I asked him while praying and groaning, that he should have mercy and let the cup pass over you so,  you would heal and forget your pain.  But He told me that His ways are not our ways. Sunmi,  who do you think I am, to question the Almighty God. He is God Almighty. He is all-knowing. Who am I to question Him.”
“hmmmmmm” Sunmi drew a long breath.
“We will be expecting you,” He said
“How are the Ts” Sunmi asked. Papa T gave his three children, names starting with the letter T. Sunmi had resolved to call them the Ts, whenever she asked after them.
“They are fine. Only that we are looking for where to send all of them for one year.  They should let me live the life of my head,” he joked and they both laughed.
“So,  Sunmi,  we will be expecting you.”
“Okay sir. Thanks sir.”
“…and please, do me a favor.”
“What Sir?” She asked, expectant.
“You have to inform Daniel that you are pregnant ”
“No way.  I won’t do that. I have resolved in my heart not to have anything to do with that beast.” Sunmi said.
“Sunmi, God’s ways are not our ways remember. See,  if he cries for mercy today, God will forgive him and will not hold anything against him. You can call him whatever names you like,  but remember,  that is not what God sees him as. Moreover you can’t deny the fact that the child there,  in your womb, is his.”
“Papa T,  I can’t tell him.  What if he sends someone to come after my life this time.”
“Oh.  That’s another angle” Papa T said, “But,  he won’t. I sensed that Daniel is being manipulated.” He paused for some seconds,  thinking, “let’s do it this way,  you will inform him,  but that will be through SMS when you have gotten here. That way, they won’t know your whereabouts. Please your whereabouts should be disclosed to only trusted friends. I will talk with your parents.”

“Thanks, Papa T” Sunmi said and ended the call.  She sighed.  She would be going into another phase of her life, to live with Papa T in a developing site situated at the northern part of Osun State University, her Alma Mata.
“God,” she said,  I know you know my tomorrow. Lord,  please,  help me. I put my trust in you.” She prayed.
She wouldn’t want to bump into people who would know that she was pregnant, so, she decided to start parking. She called Kunumi and informed her that she would be leaving town.  She told her she would call her when she gets a new number because she will be discarding her old number.
Her mother was not happy about her decision to leave Lagos, to stay far from home, but if it will make her happy,  then,  it was okay for her.
Sunmi decided to sell her car.  The car was barely a year. Her father promised to send her the proceedings from the car when a good buyer is found.
Four days after her conversation with Papa T,  Sunmi set off for Ona,  in Osun state.
